Mr. Awet A. Teklehimanot is an MSc student in Archaeological Material Science at the University of Evora, Portugal. He is based at the Northern Red Sea Regional museum Massawa, Eritrea. Awet has a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and archaeology with special research interest in maritime archaeology and coastal geoarchaeology. After his undergraduate studies, he worked as a volunteer field archaeologist in the Massawa museum, Eritrea from 2012-2015; and has been assigned a permanent position as curator of maritime archaeology and ethnographic sections in the years 2015-2016. During his career at the museum he participated in archaeological excavations at the ancient Red Sea Port city of Adulis and the coastal region of Eritrea.
Being a member of PADI diving society since 2014 and Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) since the year 2016, Awet is currently working on the provenance, petrography, mineralogy and organic analysis of late antique amphoras from the Black Assarca shipwreck. Moreover, he is also working with the Aix-Marseille University (France) on the sedimentary analysis of cores from the ancient Red Sea Port city of Adulis to understand the harbors and paleogeography of the Port city.
